Deleted candids off an old iPhone XS Max about a year ago, I hear disk drill (software) may be able to recover these lost photos. Anyone had any experience with this?

No backup just iPhone storage lol.
Either get a 1-4tb HDD to plug into your PC for $50-100 or if you have decent cell/home service, get a MyCloud (plugs into a router) for auto backup option 4tb for $200. You can always go more.

Usually when you delete pictures they still exist on your phone as small data to some point. Thats why you can still recover them after you “delete” them. But the more you use your phone either by downloading files or other things you overwrite this data. Thus making it impossible to recover the pictures.

If you do get a external, get an SSD. A few non-candid videos got corrupted on mine. It might’ve been because the videos are really old and transferred a long time ago, but other ones in the folder are just fine.
Not that’s gonna happen, but HDD’s degrade over time. Maybe not as fast if you’re only storing stuff, but SSD’s transfer faster too and last longer.
Yeah, good to make several backups. I should get a 2nd one. I’m paranoid of all my old pc stuff getting corrupted on the only one external I have and one in my computer.
this , it kinda worked for me, but then again a lot of my data was old. I got some videos back, but mostly just thumbnails/screenshots
