Something I’ve noticed is that many posts are pictures only. I see a lot of people resorting to just uploading like 20 GIFs.
Even though most people film video when capping, they only post screenshots from the vid. There’s probably several reasons for this, one of which is that the video section only has a 100MB file limit and the quality isn’t the best. Another reason is people don’t want to use sketchy random file upload sites to host their video.
Plus the links always get taken down, so the forum is littered with dead download links that don’t work anymore.
If we had our own file host the links wouldn’t get randomly deleted all the time. Plus the videos would be full resolution, original quality 1-2GB files.
But would you guys actually use it? If we had our own file host, would you upload videos to it? Another issue is hosting servers ain’t free, so we would need some kind of premium membership to cover the costs. Post ideas in the comments below.
I think if the site was less accessible to the general public it would make sense. Anyone can just access the website without creating a login and just steal videos. I mean this happens on other sites I get it, but just my opinion.
It’s a great idea but most people don’t include video links in their posts either way because of resellers imo. The there’s the cost for the upkeep, I don’t think most would want to pay for a subscription, the ideal way to cover it would be ads but again I think most would hate ads on the forum
It’s a shame, because think of all the amazing videos people have in their private collections. We would all benefit if we could all share them. And I think there are a lot of people who DO want to share their videos, but just want a better way to do it, like these guys:
Another idea I had was a Trade feature. You upload a video, and you can trade it with someone. You send an offer to someone on a video you want, and you offer them your own video and if they accept you gain access to their video and they gain access to yours in a 1 to 1 trade. That would work great for the people paranoid about leeches.
And for people who want to just share their video, they can make it available for anyone with a forum account to download. But I don’t think I’ll add a feature to enable randoms with no account to download files. Unless people don’t care and just want to share their video with everyone.
At the end of the day that’s the whole point of the forum. People come here to post their content.
This is long over due. Video links to third party hosts die within hours.
Dead links riddle the forum and we get thousands of re upload video requests on the daily. It clogs the system. It’s so bad we as mods discourage spam video begging because it literally encourages thousands of spam begging comments in every single post.
A “quality” video host would be a step in the right direction. Professional and a better experience on this forum. As mods we would need access to removed and edit prohibited content videos. The old system does not let us edit or remove prohibited content video’s. This flaw must be fixed “if” a new video host system is implemented.
A possible subscription fee or some sort of way to offset costs would be required to run this new service. Maybe a flat monthly fee to down load the hosted videos as a feature for those who want to pay for videos. I think it would be quite a popular feature and very taxing on the server. And yes require an account to use the download feature behind a paywall.
Also possibly limit the number of downloads per day to avoids people downloading every single video on the site in 30 days and overload the servers and causing them with insane bandwidth requests.
Another idea is force people to upload videos to be allow to post as a requirement. Other forums have the feature enforced already. Basically requiring video’s with all posted content.
Then put those video’s behind a video pay wall for those who want to see and enjoy the video’s hosted on the site. That way it would pay for it’s self. All videos would then be archived in the forum. Also maybe giving the video service free to top popular content uploads to encourage the quality to rise to the top. An approval system for top teir shooters.
It would require a reliable robust video hosting service with a fast server to handle the millions of daily visitors to avoid overloading and slowing down the user experience.
I like the idea that you have to upload a video to have access to downloads. Too many people lurk and contribute nothing but beg and complain for others work. Entitlement runs rampant when you aren’t required to contribute.
Another feature I’ve seen is you have to comment or like a post to view the link as well so it encourages participation from people and make you already have to have an account to see the link
I’m not sure about requiring people to jump through hoops to view the link, because it tends to make people do low quality comments like “nice” “thanks” etc.
When people like your post or comment on this forum, it’s because they genuinely appreciate it. Likes/comments here carry more weight and authenticity.
Giving people a way to earn premium by uploading videos is an interesting idea.
To me, what separates this forum from all other platforms is that it’s free and accessible. If people start posting just the video without screenshots, then paying for higher quality will become paying for access.
That’s not his idea. The forum will remain free and accessible. Posts will still require pictures, so the experience would remain the same for free users. Most posts don’t have video links at all, and many viewers are happy with just pictures already. But now we would have the option to have high quality, full resolution video downloads too.
Of course i dont doubt the intention. It’s that such change may still take away contents for people like me who wont pay a penny. The required picture can just become a preview.
Ive looked at some other forums. Users can post all the nice screenshots alongside the paywalled video but they rarely do
